English: Reading and Writing

Reading

Our reading curriculum is designed to foster a lifelong love of reading and to equip every child with the skills needed to become confident, fluent, and enthusiastic readers.

We provide a systematic and progressive approach to the teaching of reading, beginning with high-quality phonics in the early years, followed by explicit teaching of fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills across the school.

Carefully chosen, diverse texts—ranging from classic literature to contemporary works—expose pupils to a rich variety of genres, cultures, and authors.

Reading is embedded across the curriculum, ensuring that pupils develop not only decoding and understanding skills but also curiosity, imagination, and empathy. Through daily reading opportunities, guided sessions, and shared story experiences, we aim to nurture children who read widely, think deeply, and take pleasure in books both in and beyond the classroom.

Lingham Writing Overview

Our writing curriculum is designed to inspire children to become confident, creative, and effective communicators. We teach writing through a carefully sequenced approach that develops pupils’ skills in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition, while nurturing their imagination and voice as writers.

High-quality texts are at the heart of our writing curriculum, providing rich models of language and structure that inspire pupils to write for a range of purposes and audiences. From early mark-making to extended independent writing, children are encouraged to plan, draft, edit, and improve their work, reflecting the process real authors use.

We place strong emphasis on handwriting, spelling, and vocabulary development to ensure technical accuracy alongside creativity.

Through meaningful contexts for writing across the curriculum, our aim is that every child leaves our school able to express themselves clearly, confidently, and with pride in their written work.
