Art at Lingham
At Lingham, we aim to nurture creativity and imagination. Our art curriculum gives children the freedom to express ideas, feelings, and observations in a personal and meaningful way. It encourages imagination, risk-taking, and creative problem-solving — vital skills not only for art but for learning across the curriculum and life beyond school.
Through studying art, our pupils learn to see the world more closely — noticing detail, shape, colour, pattern, and texture. They begin to interpret and communicate meaning visually, becoming more observant, reflective, and appreciative of visual culture in everyday life.
We want to build fine motor skills and coordination through practical art activities (drawing, painting, sculpting, printing) to develop control, dexterity, and coordination — supporting handwriting, spatial awareness, and confidence in handling tools and materials.
Our art curriculum provides a safe space for self-expression and emotional exploration. It helps children to communicate thoughts and feelings they may not yet have words for, promoting mental health, self-esteem, and a sense of achievement when they create something unique.
Each year group introduces cultural and historical understanding through studying artists, designers, and craftspeople from diverse cultures and time periods helps children appreciate different perspectives and traditions. It builds cultural capital and broadens their understanding of how art reflects and shapes societies.
We encourage critical thinking and reflection by discussing their own work and that of others, children learn to describe, compare, and evaluate thoughtfully. They develop the language to articulate opinions and justify creative choices — key communication and reasoning skills.
